Qianlong Period: 1736-1795

Diameter: 15 1/2” x Height 6 1/2”

Note: The 18 Lohans are specific to China and while the number of Lohans dates to the Tang Dynasty, the famous art by the Monk Guanxiu painted in 891 and now in the Shengyin Temple in Hangzhou was the first representation of the 18 Lohans with their symbols. These portraits were visited by the Qianlong Emperor in 1757 when he wrote inscriptions for them, and in 1764 when the Emperor commissioned jade and stone plaques suitable for copying by rubbing. Enthusiasm for the 18 Lohans was thus spread and promoted at this time by various artists who produce adaptations, one of which was probably used for the painting on this punch bowl. No other version of this composition on a porcelain bowl has ever been published.
